Smoking? Doctor’s Can’t Be Wrong!
Needless to say, this advertisement is quite dated. (1946 to be exact) However, the strategy is to convince the reader that Camel cigarettes are the best through the persuasive “expertise” of doctors’ opinions.
While this particular ad seems laughable by today’s standards, it’s not irregular to implement this strategy today. Obviously, the tobacco industry would not utilize such a plan in the new health-conscious society that is aware of tobacco’s harmful effects, but many industries continue to use doctors’ recommendations in advertising today. Of course, many of these campaigns are for health and personal care-related products, but it remains a relevant strategy for many companies.
